Embracing Your True Self: Overcoming a Negative Body Image

Social media has become an integral part of our lives, and while it has its benefits, it’s no secret that it has a massive influence on our body image. From early Instagram filters blurring out any perceived “flaws” to the unrealistic images of perfect bodies plastered across every platform, it’s easy to see how we can quickly develop a negative body image.

As a result, we may engage in unhealthy eating and exercise habits to achieve what we believe is the “ideal” body. Even as a health coach who knows that worth is not tied to a scale, there are times when scrolling on social media leaves me feeling negative about my body. The difference now in comparison to a few years ago is that I have the awareness to know that I can do something about it.

You're in the right place if you’ve been wondering how to deal with a negative body image. In this article, I share three tips to help you overcome a negative body image and feel more comfortable in your skin.

1. Unfollow Accounts That Make You Feel Uncomfortable

The first step to overcoming a negative body image is to unfollow any accounts on social media that make you feel uncomfortable or insecure about yourself. This includes accounts that post overly-edited photos or promote dangerous dieting habits. If you find yourself comparing where they are to where you’re not, it is critical to clear your feed.

However, it’s not just social media that you need to keep in mind. If certain people make you feel like you have to look a specific way, distance yourself from them. This includes those who use the excuse that they’re just concerned for your health. If they’re making comments about your body, then it’s not likely your health is at the top of their mind. I know firsthand it may be hard at first, but ultimately it will be worth it!

2. Surround Yourself With Positive Content

Once you have taken steps to unfollow accounts that make you feel uncomfortable, fill those spaces with content that makes you feel good about yourself! This can include following influencers who promote self-love and acceptance or seeking out inspiring quotes and mantras that remind you of how special and unique you are.

The goal is for your social media feeds to be filled with positive messages that help lift your mood and encourage healthy behaviors. For instance, you might want to start following accounts about how to eat nutritious foods through intuitive eating. Or, you might feel empowered to follow accounts that talk more about exercising when you’re plus-sized. By diversifying your feed, you will encounter more people who will help you feel more confident in your skin.

3. Celebrate Your Body Instead Of Criticizing It

Finally, try celebrating your body instead of criticizing it! This could mean praising yourself for being strong enough to take on life’s challenges or having the courage to wear something different than others might expect.

It could also mean appreciating what your body allows you to do—like going for walks with friends or playing sports with the family. The point is that celebrating your body entails being grateful for how it looks without needing validation from anyone else! In doing so, you understand that there's no one-size-fits-all definition of beauty—instead, beauty comes from within!

Final Word From Tomesha

Everyone deserves to feel good about themselves—regardless of age, gender identity, race/ethnicity, or size. Overcoming a negative body image starts by filling our feeds with positive content and distancing ourselves from anything that doesn't make us feel confident.

Additionally, celebrate what makes YOU unique (because everyone is) instead of criticizing yourself for not meeting someone else's standards. Finally, remember that there's no one definition of beauty—beauty comes in all shapes and sizes, so embrace yours today!
