Being a millennial can be challenging. We are constantly bombarded with images of “perfection” in every aspect of our lives, from our careers to relationships. It can be hard to feel comfortable and confident in our skin.
Since starting my health coaching practice in 2016, the one thing that I’ve learned is that feeling comfortable in our skin starts with building a positive body image. By that, I mean accepting your body and knowing that you are enough, irrespective of your appearance.
However, you might wonder what steps to take to get there. If so, then you’re in the right place. In this article, I will share three tips to help you build a positive body image and feel good in your skin.
1. Accept What You See in the Mirror
It may seem easier said than done, but the first step to building a positive body image is learning to accept what you see in the mirror. I didn’t say “love,” as loving your body is a process. And that process is something that doesn’t happen overnight. It can take time to feel comfortable in your skin.
Instead of focusing on all the things you don’t like about your appearance, start by noticing what you like. This could be anything from your strong legs to your beautiful eyes! It doesn’t matter if these features are “small” – what matters is that they make you unique and special. Accepting your physical self is integral to building a positive body image.
2. Celebrate Your Accomplishments
The second tip for building a positive body image is learning to celebrate your accomplishments, no matter how big or small! Whether setting a personal record at the gym or simply taking time for yourself, take pride in all you have achieved.
Giving yourself some credit for all your hard work can be difficult, but it’s a self-care practice we all need to cultivate. By celebrating yourself, you can focus on all the small steps you take to big results. Rather than only celebrating the outcome, you get to appreciate the journey it took to get there. Thus, self-appreciation goes a long way toward improving how you view yourself – both inside and out!
3. Surround Yourself With Positive People
Finally, one of the best ways to build a positive body image is by surrounding yourself with people who speak positively about themselves and others. Whether you realize it or not, when people constantly talk badly about themselves and others, it’s a good chance that you will find yourself doing the same.
As the saying goes, like attracts like. Having friends constantly lifting themselves and others helps encourage you to think more positively. So reach out and connect with those who speak highly of themselves and others – it will do wonders for your self-esteem!
