4 Mindful Eating Techniques to Do Instead of Calorie Counting

how-tos mindful eating May 24, 2021

What can you do instead of calorie counting? That is a question that sparked the idea for me to create a 3-Part Mini-Series on the simple steps you can take to stop calorie counting and start mindful eating.

Whether you've been counting calories for years or just want to learn how to eat mindfully, in Part 1 of this series, I'm sharing four mindful eating techniques that you can do instead of calorie counting!

4 Mindful Eating Techniques to Do Instead of Calorie Counting

 1. Focus on the Fundamentals of Nutrition

One of the biggest hurdles my clients have faced when it comes to eating mindfully is not focusing on the fundamentals. By fundamentals, I mean ensuring that you're consuming adequate protein, carbohydrates, and fats. While that will differ depending on your wellness goal, diet, and food preferences, you can't skip the fundamentals if you want to actually get results.

2. Hydrate! Hydrate! Hydrate!

It's not enough to eat mindfully if you're not properly hydrating your body. Staying hydrated is essential and helps with everything from promoting healthy skin to detoxification. So, if you're not consuming liquids and eating foods to stay hydrated you're really missing out on a key component of a healthy diet.

3. Distinguish Hunger From Cravings

Knowing the difference between hunger and cravings is vital to make decisions that are health-promoting. That doesn't necessarily mean you only eat "healthy food." What it does mean is you're able to confidently decide when you're eating for nourishment and when you're eating for enjoyment. Neither is right or wrong, but a decision that you want to make consciously.

4. Eat for Fullness and Satisfaction

While nourishing your body is important, the foods you're eating should be those you enjoy. One of the reasons my clients are so successful with mindful eating is that they are consuming foods that make them feel good on a nutritional level and taste good on a satisfaction level. That helps them turn these habits that they've been building into a lifestyle they can maintain.

Regardless of where you are on your mindful eating journey, just having a few tried and tested techniques will help you successfully make the transition from calorie counting to mindful eating.
